Below, you have an easy recipe that you can use to make a Shepherd’s Pie, even as a beginner, it is easy and quite manageable.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs potatoes
  • 2 tbs sour cream or softened cream cheese
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 cup cream or vegetable broth
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper
  • 1 tbs extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 tbs all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 lbs ground lamb or beef (preferably farm raised meat)
  • 1 peeled and chopped carrot
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire
  • 2 tbs chopped fresh parsley leaves
  • 2 tbs butter

Directions

Step 1.

In salted water, boil potatoes until tender for 12 minutes. Drain the water, then place the potatoes in a bowl. In a different bowl, mix cream, sour cream and egg yolk, and add the mixture to the potatoes. Mash the potatoes until they are smooth.

Step 2.

Over medium heat preheat a large skillet. Add oil to the pan with lamb or beef. Season the meat with pepper and salt. Crumble and brown the meat for approximately 4 minutes.

Tip:

If you are using lamb and the pan is fatty, spoon some of the drippings away.

Step 3.

Add the chopped onion and carrots to the meat. Cook the meat and veggies for about 5 minutes while stirring frequently. In a smaller skillet, cook butter and flour over medium heat for 2 minutes. Whisk in the Worcestershire sauce and broth. You will notice it turn to a thick gravy after a minute. In the gravy, add in your vegetables and meat.

Step 4.

Preheat the broiler to high and in a flameproof rectangular casserole, fill in the vegetable and meat mixture. Add the potatoes over the meat in an even manner.

Add the paprika on top of the potatoes, then broil it 6 to 8 inches above the water until the potatoes are uniformly browned. Be careful not to over-broil the potatoes or it will not have the desired look you want. To garnish it, add the freshly chopped parsley on top of the dish and you are ready to serve.

Conclusion.

You can serve up to 4 people using this simple recipe.
